Dear Em, are these muffins really like the muffins you get in England, or do people just call them that for fun?

Yep. We get the US style muffins as well nowadays but these were what I grew up calling muffins. They are very tasty with loads of butter and lemon marmalade. There is an old nursery rhyme about the muffin man and I think these are the muffins that dude was peddling.
